Reblogging but I haven’t checked the sources/potential problems it may have yet, it seems like it could cause allergic reactions and what not. Will update after I read more about it
1) The Vivagel was tested on animals, specifically macaque monkies: http://www.asiabiotech.com/publication/apbn/06/english/preserved-docs/0610/0348_0359.pdf
2) There will be no non-latex versions in the forseeable future (this will be in the hands of Ansel (Durex) condoms and i can’t imagine that it’ll be an issue for long). This could be solved when if finally comes out, all i know is the trials were done with latex only
3) It caused inflammation in some of the trials (using twice daily, for many days in a row, so maybe a minor concern) However it is a concern. Seeing as inflammation will concentrate HIV susceptible white blood cells to the inflammation area, and the inflammation can cause the skin to break. However I only found mention of this in the second round of trials so the situation might of been resolved.
4) Seems to be no plans to distribute to Planned Parenthoods/Low-Income Health clinic, but we live in a capitalistic country, so, not unexpected, but someone should start organizing fundraisers now.
Here’s the link to the trial data: http://clinicaltrials.gov/show/NCT00331032
